Ron - I think you are getting some excellent advice to your question. I agree with you that changing the backup methodology is time-consuming. I really like RMAN, but before you embark on the change you many want to run some ideas/numbers past your management. To just defer the existing licensing fees is a pretty low ROI. RMAN is NOT free when you add all the other considerations. First, compare the price of an MML. That may convince your bosses to drop this project. We back up to disk, but that isn't free because you must have many gig of disk available. Then there is your time to learn RMAN, write the scripts, perform recovery testing, etc. Or do they consider you a sunk cost?

We have been using SQL Backtrack for backup and recovery for about 6 years now. We are being pressured to start using RMAN because it is free. Makes sense but I am wondering about reliability, complexity, learning curve, etc...

Has anyone had experience with both products or anyone new to RMAN that can give me an idea of what to expect?

Thanks!

Ron
