Well, WRT hard-core database theory:
Atzeni, de Antonellis: "Relational Database Theory" Abiteboul, Hull, Vianu: "Foundations of Databases" Ullman: "Principles of Database and Knowledge-Base Systems", vols I and II Maier: "The Theory of Relational Databases"
I'd like to say I've studied and understood everything in these books.
