Lineage/heritage of XML datastores...

... not that I think they should even exist. Quite the opposite. But what prompts the question is: I recall threads here and there which say something like - XML is from SGML is from GML is from IBM & DEC 1960's data transfer facilities - but none have provided (that I can recall) names or even acronyms for these originating facilities. While surfing for the answer (without success), I thought that it certainly seems plausible that such a facility would exist in the IMS world, from the start. ???/IMS/XML, the family tree from pointer hell.
