Lem is great man.
But that's my IMHO only. Index is piece of data what allows link some values with physical structure which use to store these values. There is no indexes in relation data model. There is no physical structue there. Only values are used in any manipulation with values. So if we have giant relational(!) DB we cannot make it smaller using described "process of indexing".
