Perhaps I end up discussing politics and religion when it isn't even my intention. Start on that and you'll find quite a few people all ready to call you names and, the enemy. Spight in fact began to suggest that his beef with me had nothing to do with the topics, here, but that I dared to question aspects of theories of evolution as variously proposed. Or else, maybe I just didn't realize what was religion on a db set aside for discussion of database theory. And I'd say, in addition to my new 'friend', quite a few of them, as Spight himself pointed out; but by actually quoting a couple of those kooks. If he'd looked into it, beyond the bits that appealed to him, he would have realized, as well, they were nutcases. But that wouldn't have proved his point. mAsterdam did much the same, quoting out of context lines and paragraphs, but not the substance and any conclusion. It was as if he put me on the stand, brought in the witnesses, and then put a gag on my mouth so that court would hear no defense. When I told him that was very wrong, his reply was, essentially - so what? It's lack of judgment and proper research in those cases. And it's definitely lack of judgment in those jumping on any bandwagon. Etc.
But I just wrote this to say that I do think this ng is missing something. I agree. You specifically mentioned him (or rather Joe did, in that unfair context leading some to perhaps revisit old doubts they may have had about Joe - and I am one who bought his books). The contribution of Pascal might be quite interesting. If some complain that he 'doesn't change opinions', then maybe it's his way. If he seems sure of himself, maybe he has reason to be. Certainly Spight and others here have - their ways. And that doesn't seem to bother anyone. Let Pascal have his way. I don't know the details of any Compu$erve feud. But perhaps he was unfairly calumniated in much the same way and had no one to join him in his corner of the ring. Let him. Let others. It's not that those who have behaved rudely, here, don't know their stuff. We all know of star athletes who are bitter individuals, even while remaining stars, wealthy misers who are even worse, and so on. But they are stars and wealthy, nonetheless. But let others who maybe know a bit more, or have other specific areas of interest in theory, contribute without having to fear such collectively bad behavior. And of course, I'm appealing to Spight and the like to do this. And that may be the flaw in the plan. It just seems that the forum could be more than this. Or maybe it is just something to write off?
