When I have used the term, I did mean something ;-) I'll buy that there is nothing consistent in the use of the term, and it is very informal.

I have used this terminology for putting data in 1NF, for example. You take a file that includes nested lists and turn it into "flat files" or relational tables. A flat file might be the opposite of one definition of a multidimensional file. --dawn
