This is true. But it is also true that, in some ways, digitization itself could be viewed as a clumsy hack.

There are many circumstance where digitization is good enough, fast enough, and cheap enough so that it is the right thing to do, regardless of whether or not it is a "clumsy hack", from a conceptual point of view.
