If you are interested in the history of data modeling, whether it's called by that name or not, you really need to look into Peter Chen and Charles Bachman.
Peter Chen introduced the E-R model in 1976 in an article in <i>Communications of the ACM</i>. AFAIK this is the first place where the E-R model was presented as such.
Charles Bachman was the principal proponent of the "navigational" data models. In a 1974 debate between the proponents of the relational model and its opponents, Bachman led the opponents.
Hey Dawn, if you really want to find out whether the term "hierarchical data model" was coined by its opponents, Bachman is the trail to follow. His "Data Structure Diagrams" precede Ed Codd's 1970 article.
