I'm not the best one to answer that (most of my grounding in database came from reading research papers in 70's). I'd suggest books by C. J. Date, Fabian Pascal and Codd himself. ACM can be a valuable resource.
Decent information is rather scarce on the Web. Database Debunkings (www.dbdebunk.com) is a good choice, and there are papers on my company's site (www.firstsql.com) with references.
