Just my one (Euro-)cent:
The open sorce project Firebird works on a relational DBMS which derived from Interbase 6.0. The project team is currently working on version 2.0.

I found Firebird to be a very stable and fast RDBMS and used it to implement a production control system with heavy data traffic (about 300 GB - 400 GB of operational data throughput per year).

The only important feature it lacks for the moment from my point of view is a REDO LOG facility. Could the realization of this feature be a good intellectual stimulation for you? If you are interested in this theme, you can have a closer look on the project's home page firebird.sourceforge.net

Best wishes from Germany :-)
