Eric,
I am not a big fan of 'Garbage Collection' especially if the language doesn't provide an option for explicit delete. Some of the OODBMS's that took the approach of providing persistence for one or more OO programming languages provide garbage collection for transient and persistent objects often because the language execution environment requires it, especially if object persistence is based on a 'Persistence by reachability' strategy.
I have never come across a need to provide garbage collection for persistent objects in JADE since if the object model is properly defined with automatically maintained relationships (including parent/child where appropriate) in practice there is seldom an issue with 'leaked' persistent objects. A garbage collector for transient objects is a different matter [but only slightly] and has been considered. Received on Sun Jul 29 2001 - 08:32:37 CEST
