If that and its converse were not true, there would not be a healthy market for both approaches. The key is learning which approach best fits your problem, and finding ways to delay that decision as late as possible so that you can compare the two approaches on live data.
Immuexa built a private skeleton library around both types of database to do just that to provide a more or less uniform access to a wide variety of databases.
