Perhaps it would help if you read some related articles that were more directed towards databases? A nice starting point is:

It refers for instance to 'Towards a theory of bulk types' by Watt and Trinder which is a bit easier to read IMO. Also look at the downloadable article by Buneman, Libkin and Suciu. The work by Dan Suciu is always very interesting, especially if you want see some real results instead of all this 'oh look how elegantly we can now write this down with monads' stuff. I'm also a big fan of the work by Leonidas Fegaras. Most of his articles are on-line:
