Yes, we have some concerns about that even for our non-cyclic tree interface. Users don't like the fine positioning skill needed to expand/collapse tree views.
We did in fact create a cyclic-tree view like you describe for use during development and debug (as you say, it is great for navigating the entire database). Ours is written in Java and it uses introspection to dynamically discover the attributes and relationships at runtime; so the tool works even when the database structure is changed. Great development time tool, but would never give it to an end-user...
