Thanks to both of you for an interesting and clarifying discussion. Yes, the part about autonomous transactions was more useful than "So what" :-), as well as the discussions about manual bookkeeping with code tables.

In this particular case, there is no legal restrictions, or any other restrictions, on the sequence, so it is not a major problem that it has holes. But still it seemed like a natural, and maybe also common, request to avoid the holes, so I was looking for a discussion on various ways to handle this, along with their pros and cons. And that's what you both contributed to.
