No. See the 8i Migration Guide for the steps required. The headers of the datafiles, the data dictionary, control files and rollback segments are all different.
It is possble to script the upgrade by playing with the results of alter database backup controlfile to trace, but that is probably only worthwhile if you are going to be running parallel for a long time. I would guess from your steps you have disk space issues?
