I too am amazed at the ridiculously low quality of Oracle's command line applications. I understand the market push for GUI apps, but there are many (if not a majority) of DBAs and developers who still, and will always, rely on the command line. It's not just SQLplus, sqlldr for example will core dump with bad input files. Core dump for crying out loud! Seriously, with all the resources Oracle has, I think they could afford putting maybe one or two people on enhancing these apps - they'd probably only need a few months to make huge improvements.
