Pinch your sys admin's copy of the O'Reilly book Unix Backup & Recovery (wait till she goes to lunch; it has a blue spine) by W Curtis Preston. Chapter 13 explains the different terms (or same terms with different meanings) for Oracle, Informix and Sybase.
