The behaviour when running ntpd, strongly depends on the OS you're running. Solaris 7 on Intel e.g. is known to have problems with it (due to the fact that absolute timers i.s.o. relative occur at kernel level). Running it on Linux, nicely adapts the time when drift occurs, and should cause no problem.

Changing time abruptly without bringing down Oracle is indeed asking for problems !
