Is jdbc driver for Oracle 9i compatible with Oracle 8i

Hi,
Does the Oracle 9i JDBC driver work with Oracle 8i. I notice that there is a separate link to the
Oracle 9i JDBC drivers
(http://otn.oracle.com/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc9201.html)
and a separate one for
Oracle 8i JDBC drivers
(http://otn.oracle.com/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc817.html)

I would want to assume that the driver is backward compatible...
