Strange Issue

Hello gurus ,

I came across a strange problem . We have Oracle 8.1.6 on Linux . Database is up & running . I am able to go in SVRMGR & do select on tables. But when I try to do ps -ef |grep $ORACLE_SID or ps -ef|grep ora , it shows nothing.
This problem started appearing 2 days back when I saw that my Backup Job failed. It checks for existence of Oracle by ps -ef command & bcoz it sees nothing , script just comes out saying Oracle not available. I even tried doing export manually & it succeeded.

Any help in this is kindly appreciated ....
