I have spoken to a couple of DBAs that I know and they say that the big machines strategy (adding CPU and Memory and moving up to more powerful machines with enough slots of CPU/Memory) will do the job, and easier to manage than parallel server or RAC. And that companies that use parallel/RAC are those who have exceeded the powerful machines of their class, say Sun or NT, and start having to cluster. I don't know for IBM though.
