createStatement Error: Unable to create an internal statement object

Hi,
I am trying to connect to a Oracle 8.1.6 client using connection.createStatement(). Once in a while I hit this error:
Exception message: createStatement(): unable to create an internal
statement object
GeneratedReply: java.sql.SQLException: createStatement(): unable to
create an internal statement object
The database is up and running and the v$sqlarea does not show a large number of messages.
Anyone has seen this before? Any idea why this happens?
