Ahhhhh . You are actually using a tool that uses ODBC on Unix! That's a scary thought :)

I've heard ODBC was available on Unix, but never really knew anyone who used it.

Not sure I can help much, but have you tried the other methods of testing connectivity...

  1. ping machine/server-name - test Tcp/Ip network -
  2. tnsping net8-database-name - test Oracle listener process on server
  3. sqlplus - test database up/down and account/password
