I would say definately _not_. I am 32 and have found that my CS degree doesn't mean much in the world today without application specialization.
I have also chosen the Oracle path and am seeking to become an Oracle 8 DBA. (Yes, Oracle 9 is out but when I started there was only 8.)
The line of books from Sybase for home study of Oracle are good. You can find reviews at Amazon.com.
