TNS: unable to connect to destination?

I have installed the Oracle6i download version from oracle web sites...
and now I try to execute SQL Plus 8.0, when I enter the username: system
password: manager

and leave the Host String blank,
the error message prompt
"Error: ORA-12203: TNS: unable to connect to destination"

anyone knows what to put in host string or how to find out what to put??
