protocal violation..need some help

when i trying to connect one oracle instance using java in unix enviroment, i got one sql exception of protocal violation. the oracle's version is 8.1.7 and the driver i used is classes12.zip. i never came across this problem before and need some help from who are more experienced. many thanks.
