New to Oracle and NT4.0 Help !!!

I am new to Oracle 8i and NT installation. I am trying to learn Oracle DBA Procedures like installation on different platforms. I loaded 8i on a NT server and tried to logon using system-uid and manager-password but I get an error say there is no instance running. I have a some books but all miss the basic steps of installation and how or what to do step by step. Yes I need a guiding hand and a swift kick but help me please!!
