cant connect

I'm installing 8.1.7 on solaris 2.6 and everytime the database creation assistant runs it can't connect to oracle. I've tried it manually as well as during the installation and it always fails. The error I get is ORA-03113. Where can I find error translation or lookup tables? the documentation that came with it doesn't seem to include anything of the sort.
