Oracle 8i corrupts instance password files on import (?)

I'm running Oracle Standard Server 8.1.6 R2 and 8.1.7 R3 for Windows NT. Every time I do an import of a DMP file when generating a database it corrupts the password file for the database instance. I have noticed this in 8.1.6 for quite a few months now and I guess I just figured Oracle would fix it in a patch, or if not certainly they would fix it in 8.1.7, but they haven't. The workaround I use is to make a backup copy of the password file:

(\oracle\ora81\database\PWD<instancename>.ora)

before doing the import, then deleting and restoring the uncorrupted file back after the import is complete.

Does anyone out there know anything about this anomoly? I had my DBA call Oracle about it a few months ago and they acknowledged the problem but had no solution at the time. As I say, I am very surprised to see it is not fixed yet. I can't believe this is normal behavior.
