also take a look at primebase.

it's rock stable, small, fast, easy to use, easy to install, available for 6 platforms and can be administered via web browser. a primebase installation is self contained in its directory. no messing with the os. you delete the directory, it's gone. (something esp. windows user will recognize as a desirable feature, but unix people might get the gist of it as well.)

you can connect to primebase via odbc, jdbc, eof, dam/dal and a proprietary and easy to use api (11 functions).

primebase is free for development and evaluation. development keys are available on request.

oracle as far as i keep hearing fails in the areas of ease of use and ease of installation (several hours and a dba and os expert needed for installation - as opposed to unzip and start for primebase). primebase should be far less expensive than oracle, in license, development and maintenance.

interbase does not have an odbc interface yet as far as i heard. also interbase is available for free, as i keep hearing. though i didn't verify this myself - have you ever heard the saying "nothing is free, not even thing that are free"?

i am not meaning to doubt free software, but as it is easy to fall in love with free software, it is also easy to overlook aspects of it that might make it more expensive when considering all costs (training, maintenance, etc.) included.

another good point about primebase: support is great. you call them, you talk to the engineers or someone who will do so for you.

i don't know about interbase, but i can assure you that you won't find that with oracle or informix.
