Oracle8i Client Install: JRE problems

When trying to install the Oracle8i stuff on a client machine (Win98 box -- plenty of ram/disk) the other day, the JRE kept bombing out before it was able to run the install software. Bombing out is a nice way to put it really -- it *really* bombed out. To the point where you had to reboot the machine to get rid of the error messages.
The error was basically one of those low-level windows errors (JRE caused a <something> fault in module <unknown> -- the module was actually labeled unkown).
Anyone have any pointers?
