"joe" does not need to belong to the dba group. For this case, the OS groups don't matter. You are positive that you are logged in as the Unix user "joe" and "$ sqlplus / " doesn't work? You are not doing something like "$ sqlplus /_at_some_script.sql..." are you? Sorry to ask such basic questions, but this is puzzling! I'll have to get back to it...
