I have installed the Oracle 8.05 developers pre-release on 4 or 5 Linux systems, all Red Hat 5.x.

I had to install the 3 supplemental tar files (called patch1, patch2, patch3) to get some missing pieces. After doing so, I was able to install and test perl::DBI version 1.02 and DBD::Oracle version 0.58 successfully. I was also able to compile php-3.05 with Oracle and MySQL support as a modules for apache 1.3.3, and it also works as advertised.

I haven't done a lot of testing yet, but I did install a few databases, e.g. the "summit sports" database known and loved by all who attended the Oracle sql intro class, and everything seems in order.

I am happy to report that Oracle works just as well on 2.1.xx and 2.2.0-pre kernels as it does on 2.0.3x.

I intend to do some serious benchmarks on these beasts soon. Just from a seat of the pants perception, I'm pretty certain that Oracle on Linux will stomp Oracle on nt running on the same hardware.
