Which Database?

I've been using VB and MS Access to write a number of small apps.

I've now been asked to write a POS system that will be used in several hundred stores across the country. Data from each store will be downloaded to our head office each night and from there loaded into our main accounting software running on an AS/400.

The daily number of transactions at each store is quite small (<100), however we will be maintaining a customer database of about 50,000 customers (duplicated in each store).

The powers that be tell me that it HAS to run under Windows.

I am concerned that Access may not be up to it, but licensing costs for more robust DB's make it quite appealing.

Any feedback you could provide would be much appreciated.
