Not sure if this will help, but I recently installed on an NT machine and had several different instances defined.  One was a demo instance that I only wanted active at certain times so after creating the instance I immediately shut it down.  When I went to start it back up through the Server Manager provided by Oracle I had all kinds of weird problems.  Then someone else who had been through this same problem told me you have to start the service through the Control Panel - Services.

Hello,

I'm using a P133 running NT Workstation to install Oracle8 on a shared
drive.  The drive is actually on a Win95 PC on my local network at home
(TCP/IP ONLY).  The installation process works fine but i'm getting
errors trying to access the database from *any* Oracle program on the
P133.  I'm trying to use the processing power of the P133 to execute
Oracle and the Win95 machine for the gig drives storage.

The error is a 'TNS' error and i'm having problems getting some of the
services to start.  Some Oracle services are started and others give me
a 'TNS' affiliated message. Oh, I get a windows error about the service
attempting to access memory at some location and it's unable to (No, my
memory is fine. That's not the problem).

Oracle8 is executed from the P133, which actually retrieves *all* data
(goes for services, etc.) and attempts to start up a database instance
through the shared network drive.

Any help is deeply appreciated.  Please reply to the newsgroups and my
email as well.

Thanks

Ron Crawford II
