I've found that the JVM shipped with the Net8 client package is pretty unstable, especially on newer NT machines. I've just created my own TNSNAMES/SQLNET files instead of using Easy Configuration or the Net8 Administrator and it works just fine. Unless you need the GUI tools to do this for you, you're better off doing it yourself.
What version of the client package did you install? If it's not 8.0.4.0.0, make sure you get that upgrade as soon as you can, because there were lots of problems in 8.0.3.0.0.
