NLS errors when running JdbcCheckup

When running the sample Java program JdbcCheckup (which uses the oci7 driver), I get the following errors:

oracle.jdbc.oci7.OCIDBException: ORA-12705:  invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified

Can anyone tell me what NLS parameters must be set?

I tried setting:

   ORACLE_HOME=/usr/oracle

   ORA_NLS=/usr/oracle/ocommon/nls/admin/data
   ORA_NLS32=/usr/oracle/ocommon/nls/admin/data
   NLS_LANGUAGE=AMERICAUS
