Actually, many places are still big blue because mainframes are the most appropriate for what they are doing. On the other hand, many of the more progressive shops like Wells Fargo (whom I otherwise detest, and just pulled completely out of personally, after 20 years of being a faithful customer) are Oracle.

Personally, I think Rdb is better technically, but the main reason to go to Oracle is its popularity. There is a large talent pool (although, not large enough, Oracle almost being a victim of its own popularity) available, and Oracle itself is financially sound (its well-known gamesmanship with its own books notwithstanding).

This question would be better asked in comp.databases.oracle.misc, as comp.databases.oracle is a defunct group.
