It is but Oracle recommend against it. This is due to the filename length restrictions on som 'old' UNIX system where you could not have filename longer than 14 characters (some NCR boxes had this I know for sure). Hence a SID of "ALONGSID" (the maximum is 8 characters) would have a file - that you couldnt do ANYTHING about called: sgadefalongsid.ora - which is 18 characters and would be truncated. Hence preventing your database from starting.
