We're running on AIX 4.1.4 and Oracle 7.3.2.1 (Parallel server) and experience very similar problem. (You're hung when you enter passw in sqlplus, and in svrmgrl you can not do anything even when you're log on as INTERNAL). In our case it's not the logging. We archive 1-2 times a day at the most.
