Hi,

There are a number of reasons I could think of.

  1. Shorter upgrade downtime. You can install the new version S/W while you are running old version.
  2. Can have a pilot system You can have a pilot system running with the new Oracle S/W to make sure your systems can run in new version. While your system are still up and running.
  3. Can fallback to old version In case something wrong with new software, you can fallback to old Oracle software by simply pointing back to the old software. (If you do not do this right, it may cost you the job)

If you can affford, having both versionsis better than having one.
