Janet,

Be sure you upgrade to release 7.3.2.2 or later (7.3.3 is due out this month on Solaris). The cost-based optimizer can do evil things in 7.3.2.1. (More specifically, it can generate search plans literally three orders of magnitude slower than in 7.2.3. The worst of this was fixed in the 7.3.2.2 update, although there are cases where it is slower than 7.2.3.

Also, version 7.3.2.1 is very picky about OFA architecture. It insisted my setup was not OFA (I am still trying to figure out what it objected to.) and it then refuses to build the database after you've installed the software. Oracle also fixed this "feature" in 7.3.2.2.

On second thought, just install 7.3.3, but be sure to check that the software is a full distribution, not a patch release. With 7.3.2.2, you actually have to install 7.3.2.1 and then do the upgrade to 7.3.2.2 because they don't distribution all of the software, just the updates. It's a painful process.

The good news is that the new optimization features in 7.3 dramatically improve performance for long-running queries. I have many cases where I get an order of magnitude improvement.

If you have more questions, just post to the group or email me at minick_rushton_at_amrcorp.com. Good luck!
