The November/December issue of Oracle magazine has a big section entitled Breaking the Petabyte Barrier. One of the articles says that today there are a few dozen of terabyte or larger VLDBs in operation, and more are on the way. The Gartner Group now defines a VLDB as any one larger than 500 GB.
An author says, "Analysts predict that it won't take as long to go from terabytes to petabytes as it did from gigabytes to terabytes."
They recommend SMP hardware for total database size under 300 GB, but MPP for raw-data size over 500 GB.
There is also a useful section on "Designing VLDBs for High Availability", including an elementary RAID analysis.
This Oracle magazine section is quite useful to read, although most of the content focuses on "under a terabyte" material, in spite of the catchy Petabyte title.
