We want to force sessions originating from the Unix server itself to use multi-threaded server(MTS) to see if we can reduce the memory usage on the server. We have quite a few local interactive connections(SQL*Forms, Pro*C, SQL*plus) consuming lots of memory. In theory, one should be able to reduce the memory requirements by using MTS and that's what we want to test.

Is there a way to force local connections to use MTS? When I tried sqlplus username_at_service_name from the server(service_name is defined in tnsnames.ora), Oracle spawns a dedicated process with protocol=beq in the process name. This doesn't happen when a user logs in from MS Windows client and Oracle does use MTS. We have identical tnsnames.ora both on Unix Server and MS Windows client.

Other questions along the same lines are, Does MTS work without the use of SQL*Net 2.X? What is protocol=beq in the process name which I get from ps -ef command? I didn't see any references to protocol=beq in the manuals.

Any comments would be appreciated.
