The system you are describing is very large. NT is quite new and the performance has not been NT's best side. If you are going to downscale from a mainframe DB2 database, I would buy a UNIX-system like SUN-Ultrasparc, Digital Alpha or HP. (You could look at others too).
On these computers you could put in lots of memory and lots of CPU's. Oracle have developed a server which uses 64bit adressing on the Alpha. This means you could put in up too 14 Gigs of memory if you want. You can also put in many CPUs (Oracle can use many cpu's).

If you should consider NT on the database server I would use a much smaller system to see how it perform.

I think Digital Alpha can use 14 CPUs (?) and SUN Ultrasparc 30 CPUs. Your database server can be moved to NT at a later stage without changing your software.
