It is not only possible, it works.....

If you are having problems, do you have SQL*Net V1 connectivity to the database (instance)? If not, do you have TNSLSNR configured correctly? There is no separate SQL*Net V1 connection to devl/2000 that I know of. Make sure you have SQL*Net V1 installed correctly on the Windows client, use the correct connect string, ie:

        T:123.123.123.123:db01 (for tcp/ip)
Test your network connection first, then test using Oracle TNSPING.
