User Exits in AIX

Has anyone writen any user exits in an AIX/Unix environment and linked them with reports? Oracle support have been useless on this topic and I have had to work out how to do it myself. I hqave worked out that an IAPXTB table is created for reference of the user exits, there is an object file created and a make file is run which changes the operation of the r25run command either for all reference or just particular report running. Can anybody tell me how effective these exits are?
