On Jim St.Cyr's (one of the contibutors to this thread) advice, I've tried some of OpenLink ODBC Drivers. They have two products:
OpenLink Lite: A single-tier driver that is like every other ODBC driver on
the market. However, gut feeling tells me that it is a bit faster that the Visigenic/ORACLE products -- and certainly more stable. In addition, the confugration options for these drivers are by far the best I've seen to date. OpenLink MT: A multi-tier driver that has a client and server piece -- thus making SQL*Net uneccesary. I was stunned at the number of ways you could set up this package. It proved to be easy to install and VERY fast relative to regular ODBC drivers. It takes more overhead on the server side, but that seems a small price to pay.
