Raid-1 or 5 - this totally depends on the performance that you are looking for, and the i/o sensitiveness of your application...
Certainly Raid-1 is much faster (often 2 - 3 times), but then it costs more in terms of the amount of disk drives you need to buy to be able to implement Raid-1 vis-a-vis Raid-5. And the performance of say a Data Export / Import - the performance gap you will notice in Raid-1 vis-a-vis Raid-5 will be even more.
Ideally if you can spare the dollars, definitely Raid-1 is the way...
